NL SILVER SLUGGER

Shortstop:

MLB Winner: Fernando Tatis Jr.

My Winner: Trea Turner

Head to head Statistics

Analysis

Fernando Tatis Jr. is the future of baseball. It's safe to say he'll have multiple Silver Slugger Awards by the time his career ends. He put together some great numbers (as seen above), while leading the league in average exit velocity (95.9 mph), hard-hit balls (102) and hard-hit percentage (62.2 percent), according to Statcast.

It's hard to go against Tatis Jr. for the Silver Slugger, but I believe this award should have gone to Turner. Turner was better than Tatis Jr. in almost every statistical category in 2020. Not only was he better than Tatis Jr. this season, he led all shortstops in batting average, on-base & slugging percentage, and total bases.

NL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

MLB Winner: Devin Williams

My Winner: Alec Bohm

Devin Williams

Williams was a star as a rookie. His numbers speak for themselves. He gave up 1 earned run in 27 innings of pitching while striking out 53 hitters and walking only 9. Unfortunately, the Brewers season came to an abrupt end in the Wild Card Series in which he did not record an appearance. We'll see what he can do over a 162-game schedule next season.

Alec Bohm

Bohm appeared in 44 games this season totaling a .338 BA. Along with his batting average, he held a .400 OBP and .881 OPS. Needless to say, he had very solid statistics for the Phillies this season. I give Bohm the nod over Williams for the shear fact that he had more opportunities. I'm not taking anything away from Williams, but I believe this award should have gone to the everyday player rather than the reliever.

NL MANAGER OF THE YEAR

MLB Winner: Don Mattingly

My Winner: Jayce Tingler

Don Mattingly

Mattingly led the Marlins to their first postseason appearance in 17 years. Along the way, he helped them win their first round Wild Card Series against the Cubs. This season was more than just managing a team on the field. The Marlins were impacted by the coronavirus to the tune of 12 games being postponed/rescheduled to future dates and doubleheaders. It would have been real easy for a young team to pack it in and fold. Mattingly's stable presence kept the Marlins grounded, and the team rewarded him with a postseason run. It's hard to argue with Mattingly as the Manager of the Year, as he transformed expectations for the Marlins organization going into the 2021 season.

Marlins' Regular Season Record: 31-29

Jayce Tingler

My choice for Manager of the Year would have been Tingler. 2020 was one of the first seasons in a long time the Padres had postseason aspirations. The Padres finished last in the NL West during the 2019 season. A lot of these struggles can be contributed to Tatis Jr. being sidelined due to injury. This season, the Padres finished with an overall record of 37-23. This was the third best record in the league behind the Dodgers and Rays. Tingler was able to guide the Padres past the Cardinals in the Wild Card Series before losing to the eventual World Series Champion Dodgers in the Division Series. The biggest differentiator for me on why I believe Tingler deserved the award is his ability to keep the team unified in the midst of trades. The Padres had multiple trades throughout the season that could've impacted their team chemistry, but Tingler was able to keep the team's eyes on the prize.

Padres' Regular Season Record: 37-23
